HOLIDAYS IN ZANTE –THE ECO FRIENDLY TOURIST

Without a doubt Zante or Zakynthos is one of the most beautiful of the Greek islands. This of course is why so many people love to take their holidays in Zante. Unlike many of the Aegean islands it is lush and green and carpeted in vast cypress forests interspersed with ancient olive groves. Surrounded by crystal clear waters it really is the jewel in the Ionian Crown!

But with visitors and tourism comes increased pressure on this fragile ecosystem. As lovers of the island we at the
Asteri Collection believe that the island and all its treasures can be enjoyed by visitors with respect and sensitivity. Here we look at the main things to consider when visiting the island.

FIRE – TAKING CARE ON YOUR HOLIDAYS IN ZANTE

As with many countries in Southern Europe, Greece can experience forest fires in the summer. The hot dry summers of recent years have increased the chances of these fires on the island and extra care should be taken on your Zante holiday over the busy summer period. Great care should be taken when disposing of cigarettes and glass bottles. The government bans the burning of material outside at this time but of course many people love to cook outside on a BBQ while on holiday in Zante. When cooking outside it is recommend that you always have a bucket of water near you in case of sparks. Causing a forest fire is a criminal offence in Greece, even if it is unintentional. If you do see a forest fire while on holiday in Zante then it is important to immediately phone the emergency service on 112.

TURTLES – PROTECTING THEM ON YOUR HOLIDAYS IN ZANTE

We love the turtles and  this beautiful shy creature is endangered due in no small part to the influx of tourists. Seeing the turtles is without a doubt one of the highlights of any holiday in Zante . At the Asteri Collection  we encourage guests that while they are on to book their turtle tours through responsible operators such as Nefis Travel

Nefis works closely with Archelon the Sea Turtle Protection Society. On their tour Archelon gives a presentation and sells some small items.  If you do wish to buy a turtle souvenir to take back from your holiday in Zante it is good to know that all the money raised is ploughed back into Archelon and their conservation work

If you plan on being a eco friendly guest it is advised to avoid the operators who feed the turtles and relentlessly pursue these shy creatures so much so that they are unable to reach the beaches to lay their eggs.

WALKING- EXPLORING WHILE ON YOUR HOLIDAY IN ZANTE

Many guests to the island like to walk and explore the more hidden flora and fauna. There are a number of companies who can help you explore the beautiful hidden environment. Companies such as Fora Zakynthos have experts who can identify flora and fauna and create minimal environmental impact. A great time to come on a walking holiday in Zante are the cooler months of April –June and September to October. Why not base yourself at the Asteri Collection in the stunning unspoilt corner of NE Zakynthos close to many interesting walks and stunning scenery.

Being a responsible tourist while on your holiday in Zante only takes a bit of thought and care. By working together we can protect and preserve this amazing environment. Hopefully then we can all continue to enjoy this stunning island for years to come.
